This is Day 1 of my Autumn Energy Reset series, where we walk through all nine days of Sharad Navratri together, one goddess and one chakra at a time. New here? Start with the big picture in my main Autumn Energy Reset blog.
Day 1 is here, and I am so excited to start this ride with you! Before we climb anywhere, we need to know what we are standing on. Nothing tall stays up without a deep, strong base, and that includes you. So today we go all the way down to your roots.
Meet Goddess Shailaputri: The Daughter of the Mountains
Our journey begins with Goddess Shailaputri, the first form of Navadurga. Her name tells her story. Shaila means mountain and putri means daughter, so she is the daughter of the mountain. She is the child of Himavan, the king of the Himalayas, and she carries that mountain strength everywhere she goes.
Her story reaches back to an earlier life, when she was Sati. Sati gave up that life, and she returned as Shailaputri, who later became Goddess Parvati. I love this part because it shows a soul that keeps coming back to stand firm in its purpose.
Look at how she appears. She rides Nandi, the sacred bull, who stands for steady, patient power. She holds a trident in her right hand, which stands for balance between body, mind, and spirit. In her left hand, she holds a lotus, which shows that real strength can stay soft and pure.
Imagine a majestic, steady, unshakeable mountain peak standing tall against strong winds and changing weather. That is the exact energy Goddess Shailaputri brings into your life today. When you connect with her on Day 1, you tap into that same mountain-like strength inside yourself. You remind your spirit that no matter how wild the world gets around you, you can always stay steady, safe, and secure.
The Root Chakra Connection
Shailaputri connects with the Root Chakra, called Muladhara. It sits at the base of your spine, and it holds your sense of safety, stability, and belonging. When it glows, you feel at home in your body and your life, and you feel like the ground will hold you.
In Vedic astrology, the Root Chakra links with Mars. Mars is the planet of courage, drive, and grit. A strong Mars helps you stay put when life gets shaky, and it gives you the energy to build a life you can lean on. So when Shailaputri blesses your root, she also wakes up your inner warrior in a calm, grounded way.
Your Root Chakra Healing Practices
You do not need complicated setups or hours of free time to honor Day 1. Here are a few simple, powerful ways to connect with Goddess Shailaputri and balance your Root Chakra. Go gently, and if anything feels uncomfortable, ease off and breathe normally.
Meet the earth
Stand barefoot on the floor, or even better, on grass, stone, or soil. Spread your toes and let your weight sink into your feet. Stay for one full minute and feel the earth hold you. Walking slowly in a garden or a park works beautifully too.
Breathe low and slow
Sit comfortably and rest one hand on your belly. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, and breathe out gently for a count of six. Keep going for about two minutes. That long exhale tells your body it is safe to relax.
Grow your roots
Close your eyes and picture a warm red light glowing at the base of your spine. Now see roots growing from that light, down through the floor and deep into the earth, just like a mountain. Feel the earth hold you up.
Chant the root sound
Take a deep breath and chant “Lam”, the seed sound of the Root Chakra. Let it hum low in your belly, and repeat it for a few minutes. Feel the vibration settle at the base of your spine.
Speak a grounding affirmation
Place a hand on your lower belly and say, “I am safe. I am steady. I am supported.” Say it slowly, and let each word land.
Move like a mountain
Mars loves action, so give your body some! Stand tall in Mountain Pose with your feet firm on the floor, then try a few slow squats or a gentle Child’s Pose. Moving your legs and hips wakes up the energy at the base of your body.
Eat warm, earthy food
Choose simple, cooked, filling meals today. Root vegetables like sweet potato, carrot, and beetroot are perfect for grounding. If you are fasting for Navratri, keep your food light, sattvic, and gentle on your body.
Make it a daily habit
You can repeat this short ritual every morning or evening, not just today. Small, steady steps shape a strong root, and that is exactly Shailaputri’s lesson.
The Divine Mantra
In the morning and evening, light a simple lamp or red candle. Sit comfortably for a few quiet moments, and set a strong intention to slow down and anchor your attention in the present. Now connect with the divine grace of Goddess Shailaputri by chanting or listening to her sacred mantra three times, or as many times as feels good, with a thankful heart.
Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah
Feel the sound vibration buzzing through the base of your spine, sweeping away worry and replacing it with steady peace. Sit quietly for a moment and notice how your body feels.
What Comes Next
Now that your roots feel strong, we get to move up! Tomorrow we meet Goddess Brahmacharini, who walks the path of devotion and discipline. She connects with the Sacral Chakra, the home of your emotions, creativity, and joy, and she belongs to Venus in Vedic astrology. Come back for Day 2!
