Goddess Kalaratri and Crown Chakra

This is Day 7 of my Autumn Energy Reset series, where we walk through all nine days of Sharad Navratri together, one goddess and one chakra at a time. Missed Day 6? Read it here. New here? Start with the big picture in my main Autumn Energy Reset blog.

Day 7 is the one many people feel a little nervous about, so let me say this right away. You can relax! Today’s goddess looks fierce, but she is one of the most protective forces in all of Navratri. She is here to take away what scares you, and she will stay beside you while she does it. Ready? Let’s step into the night together.

Meet Goddess Kalaratri: The Fierce Protector

Day 7 belongs to Goddess Kalaratri, the seventh form of Navadurga. Her name holds her whole story. Kala means time and darkness, and ratri means night. She is the dark night that ends the darkness itself.

Her story is a powerful one. A demon named Raktabija had a strange gift. Every drop of his blood that touched the ground created a brand new demon, so the more the gods fought him, the stronger his army grew. Goddess Durga called on Kalaratri, and she stopped him by taking in every drop before it could fall. With that, the endless chain of fear finally ended.

Her appearance is bold. She has a deep, dark complexion, wild flowing hair, and three eyes that blaze with light. A necklace shines on her chest like flashes of lightning. One of her hands lifts to say “fear not,” another gives a blessing, and the other two carry a sword and an iron hook. Even though she looks ferocious, she is also called Shubhankari, which means the one who brings goodness. Her fierceness is only for what harms you.

Think about the sky just before sunrise. That stretch of night feels the darkest of all, yet it is also the moment when dawn is closest. That is the gift Kalaratri brings you today. She shows us that facing the dark does not have to be scary, because the light is already on its way.

The Crown Chakra Connection

Kalaratri connects with the Crown Chakra, called Sahasrara. It sits at the very top of your head, and it is often pictured as a thousand-petaled lotus. It holds your higher awareness, your sense of connection with something bigger than yourself, and your inner peace. When it glows, you feel calm, wise, and deeply linked to life.

In Vedic astrology, the Crown Chakra links with Jupiter. Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, faith, guidance, and blessings. A strong Jupiter helps you trust the bigger plan, learn from every experience, and grow in a hopeful way. So when Kalaratri blesses your crown, she clears away the fear that blocks your view and lets Jupiter’s wisdom shine through.

The last three days of Navratri, Days 7, 8, and 9, all connect with the Crown Chakra. Each one shows a different side of this highest energy center.

Today is about letting go of fear.

Why Days 7, 8, and 9 All Belong to the Crown Chakra

You may wonder why three days in a row connect with the same chakra. There are seven chakras and nine days, and the Crown Chakra sits at the very top, so it holds the final stage of your climb. The first six days each light one chakra from the bottom up. The last three days share the crown because opening it takes time, like a door that swings open slowly.

Day 7 clears the fear that keeps it shut, Day 8 washes the mind clean, and Day 9 brings fulfillment.

Your Crown Chakra Healing Practices

These practices are calm, spacious, and gentle, just like this chakra. Select whatever speaks to you, or blend a few into a quiet evening routine. Go at your own speed, and if something feels uncomfortable, pause and return to your natural breathing.

Sit in stillness

Find a quiet seat and sit with your back tall and your hands resting in your lap. Close your eyes and simply watch your breath for 5 to 10 minutes. When thoughts drift in, let them float by like clouds, and return to your breathing.

Name your fear on paper

Write down one fear that has been following you around. Look at it for a moment, and then write beside it what you would say to a friend who felt the same way. Finish by tearing the paper up or folding it away, as a sign that you are ready to let go.

Breathe light to your crown

Sit comfortably and rest your attention on the top of your head. With each breath in, imagine a soft stream of light flowing down into the crown. With each breath out, feel the light spreading through your whole body. Continue for 2 to 5 minutes.

Glow in violet and white

Close your eyes and picture a gentle violet and white light floating just above your head, like a glowing lotus. Let it open slowly with each breath, and feel it fill you with peace. Rest in that light for 2 to 5 minutes.

Chant the crown sound

Take a deep breath and chant “Om“, the sound often linked with the Crown Chakra. Let it ring softly through your whole head, and then enjoy the quiet space after the sound fades. Repeat it for a few minutes.

Speak your affirmation

Place your hands in prayer at your heart and say, “I release my fear. I am protected. I welcome the light.” Say it slowly, and let the words settle into your body.

Watch the night sky

Kalaratri is the goddess of the night, so spend a few minutes outside after dark, or at a window. Look up at the sky and let yourself feel small in the best possible way. It is wonderfully calming to remember how big the universe is.

Light a lamp and keep it simple

Light a small lamp for Kalaratri this evening and sit with it for a moment. Choose light, simple meals today, and dim the lights in your home as the evening goes on. If you are fasting for Navratri, follow what suits your tradition and your body.

Bring It Along

You can return to these practices any day of Navratri, or any time life feels heavy. Kalaratri’s lesson is easy to keep close. When fear shows up, face it gently, and trust that the light is near.

The Divine Mantra

Choose a quiet moment this evening and light a small lamp if you like. Sit comfortably, take a few slow breaths, and let your shoulders drop. Then call on Goddess Kalaratri by chanting or listening to her mantra three times, or as many times as feels right, with a grateful heart.

Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah

Feel the sound rise to the top of your head, melting away worry and leaving a feeling of calm protection. Rest for a moment and notice how light you feel.

What Awaits on Day 8

Fear has stepped aside, so now we make space for peace! Tomorrow we meet Goddess Mahagauri, the pure and gentle form of the Goddess who washes the mind clean and brings deep healing. She also connects with the Crown Chakra, and she belongs to Jupiter in Vedic astrology. See you on Day 8!
